From The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area (NC):

Assoc. General Contractors of America says their index has slipped, but the worst is over.

The score for North Carolina’s Heartland region, which includes the Triad, also registered with a 0.9 percent dip, based on continued low demand for labor.

Nonresidential construction employment in the Greensboro/High Point metropolitan area saw a 20 percent decline between August 2008 and August 2009 — a difference of about 3,700 jobs — according to the Associated General Contractors of America.

Burlington saw a 15 percent decline in construction employment, about 500 jobs. Winston-Salem fared the best of the Triad’s cities on a percentage basis, seeing a 12 percent decline in construction employment between August 2008 and 2009, about 1,200 jobs.

However, Heartland contractors are reporting that business activity is rising and that they believe the worst of the industry downturn is behind them. Contractors are expecting “modestly” stronger activity in 2010.
